Overview of the Office

The Computer Fundamentals Teaching and Research Office, part of the Basic Courses Teaching Department, is a young, united, and vibrant team. It consists of four full-time teachers, all holding intermediate or higher professional titles. In addition, there is a strong team of external instructors, including part-time teachers from key universities such as Tongji University and Shanghai University, who contribute valuable insights and support to the college’s computer fundamentals education.

The office is responsible for teaching computer fundamentals across all majors. It offers two main courses—“Computer Fundamentals A” and “Computer Fundamentals B”—tailored to meet the specific needs of different programs. It also provides guidance for students preparing for the Shanghai Computer Proficiency Test (Level 1).

Through the “Computer Fundamentals” course, students gain an understanding of the development and application of computer technology, recognize its importance as a basic tool in modern society, and acquire essential computer knowledge. The course aims to improve students’ practical skills to meet the demands of an information-based society. Students are expected to become proficient in office software and multimedia tools including audio, video, image editing, and web development software.

The goal is to equip students with strong IT capabilities and enable them to proficiently use common computer software to meet the digital requirements of various jobs. Students are expected to pass the Level 1 Shanghai Computer Proficiency Test and obtain certification during their time at the college.

In 2014, the office implemented a major curriculum reform for the class of 2014, shifting from a traditional model of separate classroom and computer lab instruction to a fully integrated, lab-based teaching model. The reform proved successful, with both teachers and students adapting well. This hands-on approach significantly boosted student engagement, effectiveness, and initiative. In the November 2015 Level 1 Computer Test, students from the class of 2014 achieved a markedly higher pass rate, placing the college among the top vocational institutions in Shanghai.

Overview of Curriculum Reform

In 2014, a major curriculum reform was carried out. The original “Computer Fundamentals” course was split into two: Computer Fundamentals A and Computer Fundamentals B, to better address the different needs of certification-based and prerequisite-focused programs.

The teaching model shifted from a split system of classroom theory and computer lab practice to a fully integrated, hands-on model conducted entirely in computer labs. Instructional methods changed from a lecture-and-practice format to real-time, screen-controlled demonstrations by the teacher, with students following along on their own devices. This significantly increased teaching efficiency and student motivation.

As a result, the class of 2014 saw a marked improvement in pass rates for the 2015 Shanghai Level 1 Computer Test. Since then, the college has consistently ranked among the top in test pass rates across universities in Shanghai.
