Before August 2009, the Physical Education Teaching and Research Section of Shanghai Polytechnic Institute was managed by the College of Physical Education of Shanghai University. Shanghai University assigned physical education teachers to the institute to take full charge of PE instruction.

In August 2009, the institute began hiring retired PE teachers to be fully responsible for the work of the PE section, which now falls under the Department of General Education. Currently, the section has 3 full-time teachers and 10 part-time instructors (including university and retired teachers), with 2 holding senior professional titles and 11 holding intermediate titles. The section is responsible for physical education instruction for all 78 classes across the institute. Teachers use Shanghai University’s PE textbooks while adapting them to the actual needs of the students at the institute.

The section also supports the institute’s Youth League Committee and Student Union in guiding student sports clubs. There are currently five sports clubs: Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Street Dance, and Taekwondo.

The section has formed a men’s basketball team, men’s and women’s badminton teams, and men’s and women’s table tennis teams to represent the institute in competitions such as the 4th Jiading District Games and the 1st Jiading District Citizen Sports Games (university student division), achieving excellent results. Six students participated in the Shanghai University Swimming Championships in 2011, 2012, and 2013, earning first, second, third, and seventh places in the 50-meter freestyle.

In 2015, at the 1st Jiading District Citizen Sports Games, the institute was awarded the Sportsmanship Award and the Outstanding Organization Award.
