
General Education Overview
The Department of Basic Courses is mainly responsible for teaching general courses across the college. Core courses include: College English, Information Technology, Advanced Mathematics, Economic Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical Modeling (elective), Physical Education and Health, among others. The department is also responsible for organizing sports activities for faculty and students, as well as managing and operating the college’s sports facilities.
The department has a strong faculty team, with more than 30 full-time and part-time teachers. Among them are 6 professors and associate professors, over 10 lecturers with intermediate professional titles, and more than 20 teachers holding doctoral or master’s degrees. Additionally, over 10 faculty members are dual-qualified (with both academic and professional credentials). The department boasts multiple Shanghai municipal-level award-winning teachers, including “Teaching Masters of Vocational Colleges in Shanghai” and “Outstanding Mathematical Modeling Instructors.” Faculty members have also been awarded commendations such as major and minor merits by the Jiading District Education Bureau, and several have received the Shenjia Teaching Excellence Award. Teachers have won multiple prizes in the college and Shanghai “Starlight Program” teaching competitions. The department has led one municipal-level quality course project approved by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and has received both first and second prizes in provincial and municipal teaching achievement awards.
The Department of Basic Courses has built a high-quality teaching team, guided by the college’s educational philosophy of “virtue as the foundation, application-oriented focus, and emphasis on skills.” The department continuously expands its teaching and research efforts. Faculty have compiled and published more than ten textbooks, including one listed in the Ministry of Education’s “11th Five-Year Plan” and one included in the “21st Century Continuing Education Excellence Textbook” series. They have also co-authored three textbooks and published over one hundred research papers, more than fifty of which are indexed by SCI. To date, the department has completed or is undertaking more than ten municipal and college-level research and curriculum development projects.
In the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the department has achieved excellent results for many consecutive years, winning multiple national second prizes and numerous first, second, and third prizes in the Shanghai regional competitions. The department has also attained strong results in student sports competitions across Shanghai.
