From Novice to Rising Research Star: The Journey of a Communications Student

Jiang Jianfeng, a Class of 2022 student majoring in Modern Communication Technology at the School of Communications and Electronic Engineering, began his college journey with only a vague understanding of his field. Drawn by the college’s rich research resources and strong academic atmosphere, he actively engaged in skill competitions and research projects under the guidance of his professors. Starting with basic circuit soldering and coding, he dedicated countless hours in the lab, overcoming challenges through persistent study and experimentation.

During a project focused on industrial IoT gateways, Jiang tackled a major signal interference issue. Through extensive literature review and discussions with his mentors, he proposed an innovative algorithm improvement. After months of hard work, his team successfully optimized the signal transmission efficiency of their IoT gateway module.

His research achievements have been recognized in the university’s student research collections and attracted attention from companies seeking practical applications. Now participating in an internship program, Jiang’s outstanding electronic development skills have earned him a highly competitive offer, setting a strong foundation for his future career.

Li Wenqiang, a Han Chinese and a member of the Communist Youth League, is a 2022 student majoring in Information Security Technology and Application at the School of Communications and Electronic Engineering, Shanghai College of Science and Technology. As a college student, he navigates the vast ocean of technology with wisdom and perseverance, showcasing the vibrant spirit of the new generation. Immersed in various innovation projects, Li’s boundless passion for science and technology propels him forward, laying a solid foundation for his future achievements.

Pursuing Dreams through Innovation, Never Slowing Down

During his university journey, Li has distinguished himself with outstanding academic performance, earning the First-Class Comprehensive Scholarship and the title of “Outstanding Student.” Beyond academics, he has also excelled in innovation and entrepreneurship. Leading his team, he participated in major competitions such as the China International “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the Shanghai Creation Cup. His projects, inspired by a deep concern for ecosystems and a passion for intelligent technology, stood out under his leadership. Facing numerous challenges, he remained undaunted, applying his strong technical skills and innovative thinking. Li also values hands-on experience, actively participating in practical activities to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. His team’s project earned a Bronze Award at the national level, a Gold Award at the city level, gained widespread media coverage, and achieved commercial success with multiple self-developed products sold. His pursuit of innovation continues: he has successfully filed for multiple patents, including one design patent and two software copyrights, with four utility model patents currently under review. These accomplishments demonstrate his strength and relentless passion for scientific innovation.

Leadership with Vision, Building the Future Together

Li has also shown remarkable leadership in team management and campus activities. He serves as the Director of the College’s Student Growth Support Center, President of the School’s Student Union, and Assistant for the incoming Class of 2023. During his year at the Growth Support Center, he accumulated over 300 hours of service, with a single-day service record of eight hours. As Student Union President, he organized and led major events such as the orientation program for over 2,500 new students and various campus evening galas. Under his leadership, the Student Union became a dynamic force in enriching campus culture, earning the respect and recognition of both faculty and students.

Social Work Star – Zhang Jing

– Outstanding Graduate in Social Work

Zhang Jing is a 2014 graduate of the Social Work program at Shanghai College of Science and Technology.

In June 2014, she joined the national “Western China Volunteer Program” and was assigned to work at the Party and Government Office of Wenquan Town in Suiyang County, Guizhou Province. That September, she was struck by a speeding unlicensed motorcycle, thrown over ten meters, and sustained multiple injuries — the most severe being to her leg. Despite repeated wound relapses and ongoing treatment in major hospitals across Zunyi, Zhang Jing remained committed to her post and continued working.

Later, she volunteered to be transferred to a more remote mountainous township. Once she adapted to her new role, she went beyond her daytime responsibilities by volunteering at the local middle school in the evenings and running weekend tutoring classes. She also frequently visited underprivileged children in the surrounding villages.

During her time teaching, Zhang Jing personally supported three students from low-income families. Through Weibo and WeChat, she launched a grassroots donation drive, collecting over 1,500 articles of clothing, more than 1,000 pairs of shoes and socks, and over 100 schoolbags within just a few months. She then partnered with colleagues to deliver the supplies, reaching five to six villages and benefiting hundreds of students.

On May 20, 2015, her inspiring story was widely reported by major media outlets, including China News Service, People’s Daily Online, Global Times, Reference News, Sina, NetEase, and Sohu, among more than 20 platforms.

Social work emphasizes compassion and responsibility. As an outstanding graduate of the program, Zhang Jing has embodied the spirit of helping others and selfless dedication. Her actions brought real change and warmth to children in need and continue to inspire those around her.

Ma Yuan, female, Han ethnicity, born in March 2003, member of the Communist Youth League.
A student of the Class of 2021 majoring in Art & Design, she served as Deputy Class Monitor, Vice President of the Photography Club, and President of the Student Union.
In September 2024, she was admitted to Shanghai Sanda University through the “Top-up to Bachelor” program.

“Ruida Exploration” and “Smart Riveting Pioneers” Win Gold in Vocational Track

Guardians of Mine Safety: Revolutionizing the Industry

With the growing demand for mineral resources and the national push for smart mining development, Xu Haihong, a sophomore majoring in Artificial Intelligence Technology, was inspired by his grandfather and father’s long careers in the mining industry. After visiting mining sites and seeing the urgent need to enhance worker safety, Xu set out to address this challenge through the Ruida Exploration project.

Facing challenges like technical implementation and funding, Xu’s team received significant support from Shanghai College of Science and Technology. The school provided expert guidance, laboratory resources, and financial backing, facilitating their journey from concept to execution.

“The team’s strength lies in our diverse, interdisciplinary backgrounds. This allowed us to complement each other’s strengths, effectively combining knowledge and practical innovation,” Xu said proudly.

Their hard work paid off when Ruida Exploration won the Gold Award in the Creative Group at the 2024 China International College Student Innovation Competition. In addition to the award, the project has created both direct and indirect job opportunities. Xu and his team are now working on refining the product prototype and preparing to showcase their latest progress at the national competition. The primary goal of the project is to develop a smart mining helmet that will reduce the risks for workers and accelerate the shift towards intelligent mining. Looking ahead, the team is committed to continuing their innovation, offering sustainable solutions for the mining industry.

Leading Innovation in Robotic Riveting

Wang Ling, a third-year student majoring in Industrial Robotics, has always been passionate about technological innovation. He and his team at Shanghai College of Science and Technology recognized the inefficiencies in traditional riveting processes in smart manufacturing and decided to use modern technology to improve this process. This led to the creation of the Zhimou Pioneer project.

Working under the guidance of faculty members, Wang’s team, made up of students from various disciplines such as robotics, automation, and automotive technology, developed a solution using machine vision and robotics for automated riveting. Their primary challenge was securing funding and finalizing the technical design, but with numerous discussions, experiments, and continual optimizations, they succeeded.

“The school provided us with the necessary resources, funding, and entrepreneurial guidance. The support of industry experts was also vital for the project’s success,” Wang said.

The project has already produced a prototype that has been tested in several enterprises, leading to significant improvements in production efficiency and product quality. In addition, the Zhimou Pioneer project has filed multiple patent applications and won several awards, including the Gold Award at the 2024 China International College Student Innovation Competition.

Moving forward, Wang and his team aim to further refine the intelligent riveting system, improve its stability and intelligence, and explore commercialization opportunities by building partnerships with more enterprises, bringing the project’s achievements to the market.

Forging the Future: Zhang Dong and His Students Revolutionize Riveting Technology

Zhang Dong, Vice Dean of the School of Intelligent Manufacturing at Shanghai University of Science and Technology, leveraged his extensive industry experience to guide a student team in successfully completing an intelligent riveting equipment project. This innovation not only brought significant economic benefits to enterprises but also provided students with invaluable hands-on experience. The team’s efforts earned them a national second prize at the College Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, highlighting the success of industry-education integration.

Throughout the project, Zhang led students in analyzing bottlenecks in traditional riveting processes. By incorporating industrial robotics and developing an automated system, they achieved significant improvements in production efficiency and quality. This achievement underscores the critical role of school-enterprise collaboration in talent development and technological advancement. Looking ahead, Zhang aims to further deepen industry-education integration, fostering highly skilled intelligent manufacturing professionals to drive future industry progress.

From SCST to Global Excellence: A Student’s Journey to Prestigious Universities Abroad

Guo Siyi, an outstanding alumna of Shanghai College of Science and Technology, has carved an impressive academic journey through perseverance and determination, establishing herself as a rising star in international education.”

Her journey began at the University of South Wales in the UK, which became a defining chapter in her life. There, she forged friendships with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds, exchanging insights about unique traditions and societal norms. These cross-cultural interactions nurtured her open-mindedness and expanded her worldview, allowing her to appreciate global diversity through a multifaceted lens.

The university’s high-quality educational resources and distinguished faculty cultivated her capacity for independent critical thinking. Through tackling challenging academic projects – from data-driven research to collaborative engineering tasks – she significantly enhanced her technical expertise and gained cutting-edge knowledge in software development and sustainable design principles.
