From June 8 to 12, 2025, the “China-Laos Vocational Education Cooperation and Exchange Series,” hosted by Shanghai College of Science and Technology, was successfully held in Vientiane, Laos. The event included the inauguration of the Overseas College in Vientiane, the export of professional and curriculum standards, and the launch of the first “Chinese Language + Vocational Skills” training program—marking a major milestone in the college’s journey of taking vocational education global.

The formal establishment of the Overseas College in Vientiane signifies a key step in the college’s international education efforts. Jointly built by the college and the Yunnan Chamber of Commerce in Laos, the institution aims to cultivate highly skilled talent for Laos, serving the development of the China-Laos Economic Corridor.

On the inauguration day, a delegation from the college—led by Xu Jinru, Vice Party Secretary and Executive Vice President, along with Shen Bin, Office Director; Xu Pai, Vice Dean of the School of Communication and Electronic Engineering, Li Liqun, Vice Dean of the School of Business Management; Wang Yunshi, Program Director of Networking Marketing and E-Commerce and Wang Fan, Head of the Academic Affairs Division of the International Education College—held discussions with representatives from the Yunnan Chamber of Commerce in Laos. The two sides engaged in in-depth conversations on local Chinese enterprises’ talent needs, talent development models, and in-depth school-enterprise cooperation.

Vice President Xu emphasized that the establishment of the overseas college is a key move in response to the Belt and Road Initiative. The college will leverage its educational resources to provide strong talent support and technical services for Chinese enterprises in Laos. The Chamber of Commerce praised the college’s educational achievements and expressed strong expectations for mutual benefits through cooperation. Following the discussion, the Chamber officially received the college’s professional and curriculum standards and signed a school-enterprise cooperation agreement, laying a solid foundation for future collaboration.

During the four-day “Chinese Language + Vocational Skills” training program, the teaching team delivered systematic, practice-oriented courses. The training began with cultural integration, using Chinese cultural creative paper-cutting from the Forbidden City as a case study, engaging students in traditional crafts like paper-cutting and scratch painting to immerse them in Chinese heritage.

Modern marketing modules covered topics such as community marketing and customer relationship management, supplemented with hands-on training in short video production and livestream e-commerce. The course on “China’s AI Development and Security Technology Applications” explored cutting-edge applications like intelligent surveillance and facial recognition, broadening participants’ understanding of how technology empowers safety management.

The training innovatively combined Chinese language instruction with practical vocational skills, deeply integrating cultural understanding with real-world business scenarios. Students were highly engaged, enthusiastically participating in interactive sessions and hands-on practices.

On June 12, the first training session at the Overseas College in Vientiane concluded successfully. During the final assessment, trainees showcased their newly acquired skills—from creative short video planning to smooth mock livestreams—demonstrating their transformation. “These skills are so practical—I can use them right away!” said one excited trainee, eyes gleaming with anticipation for the future.

After the assessments, qualified students received official vocational skill certificates. A heartfelt farewell ceremony followed, filled with gratitude and joy. Students wrote messages like “Thank you, teacher” and “Long live China-Laos friendship” to express their appreciation. As the final student offered a warm hug to the instructors, tears and laughter mingled, and phrases like “Sabaidee” and “Zàijiàn” (goodbye) echoed in the classroom—marking a deeply emotional moment of cross-border friendship and educational exchange.

This initiative received strong support from the Laotian education authorities, the Yunnan Chamber of Commerce, and Chinese enterprises operating in Laos, building a new platform for the college’s global engagement. The successful launch of the first “Chinese + Vocational Skills” training class signifies the beginning of full-scale operations at the Laos overseas campus. Looking forward, the college will continue deepening educational cooperation with Laos, developing more tailored training programs based on local needs, and contributing robust educational momentum to the building of a China-Laos community with a shared future.

On May 16, 2025, the launch ceremony of the Shanghai Vocational Education Month and the opening of the 11th “Starlight Program” Skills Competition for Vocational Colleges were grandly held at Shanghai Information Management School. Key attendees included Zhou Yaming, Deputy Secretary of the Shanghai Education and Health Work Committee and Director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission; Zhao Zhen, Deputy Director of the Municipal Education Commission; Wang Ronghua, Chairman of the Shanghai Education Development Foundation; Jiang Hong, Vice Chairman of the Foundation; and Wang Zhihua, Deputy District Mayor of Xuhui District.

At the event, vocational experience booths were set up. Our college was one of the exhibiting institutions, showcasing under the theme “Integration of Industry and Education, Empowered by Digital Intelligence: Building a New Ecosystem for High-Skilled Talent Development.” With three innovative vocational experience projects integrating AI and advanced technologies, our booth became a highlight of the event. Leaders including Zhou Yaming and Wang Ronghua visited the booth and expressed keen interest in the displays.

“This robot dog isn’t just a pet — it’s a ‘trainee’ from our AI lab. We call it Benben,” said Han Fang, Deputy Party Secretary and President of the college. “To address the industrial transformation driven by AI, we’re fully implementing the ‘AI + Education’ strategy — creating AI-oriented majors, curriculum systems, and learning environments to empower talent development with solid technology.”

Wang Ronghua and other leaders praised the college’s efforts in integrating cutting-edge technology into vocational education. They emphasized the importance of aligning vocational education with industry upgrades and advancing technological empowerment to cultivate more highly skilled talents suited to the digital era.

Tech Charm Inspires Vocational Exploration
“Teacher, can this robot dog understand what I say?” asked Chen Leqi, a curious student from Shanghai Zhongguo High School. When a student volunteer activated the voice interaction mode and the robot dog tilted its head and waved in response, the young “experience officers” burst into amazed cheers.

After operating the ground robot, student Xu Zhucheng said excitedly, “The level of tech here is beyond what I imagined. It’s so cool to actually get hands-on with the latest innovations!”

As a vocational college with a foundation in science and technology, our institution remains committed to its mission of “tech-driven, engineering-based” education. We incorporate industry needs into curriculum design and use technological innovation to drive talent cultivation. The three projects showcased are the results of our “position-course-competition-certification” integrated education model and a vivid demonstration of how vocational education connects with Shanghai’s key industries such as the digital economy and smart equipment manufacturing.

Starlight Competition Experience Projects

1. Immersive VR Experience for New Energy Vehicle Assembly and Disassembly
This project features a VR software developed based on the Volkswagen ID.4 model. Using VR devices, participants can observe in detail the structure and function of core components like the electric drive, control system, and battery of new energy vehicles. The program also simulates dealership scenarios, enabling users to virtually disassemble, inspect, and repair the vehicle — offering a direct and immersive look into NEV technology.

2. Drone-Based Campus Security Inspection & Ground Robot Interaction
This project leverages advanced drone technology to enhance the efficiency and intelligence of campus security patrols. Equipped with HD cameras and infrared thermal imaging, the drones can monitor all areas of the campus, transmit real-time images, and detect anomalies with precision. Intelligent algorithms enable automatic alerts and data analysis. Participants can experience drone operation and security procedures firsthand (e.g., via indoor large-screen simulation) and interact with ground robots to explore the latest in AI development.

3. Virtual Avatar Motion Capture Interaction
This experience allows participants to wear industry-leading motion and facial capture devices to control a 3D-modeled digital avatar in real time. Powered by this cutting-edge technology, the virtual avatar moves with fluidity and interacts naturally with users. Participants can create personalized digital characters and explore how motion capture merges physical actions and digital personas.

From November 26 to December 3, 2024, a delegation from our school, led by Han Fang, Deputy Secretary of Party Committee and President of the school, along with Wu Xing, Vice Dean of the School of Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering, and Li Lu, Office Director of the School of International Education, visited Malaysia and Singapore for an eight-day exchange. The delegation conducted visits to Taylor’s University Malaysia, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) Malaysia, Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Singapore, Nanyang Polytechnic Singapore, and Schneider Electric (Singapore).

The first stop was Taylor’s University Malaysia, where President Barry Winn, Dean of the International Education School Deng Huijun, and faculty leaders from various departments warmly received the delegation. Both institutions engaged in in-depth discussions on international education initiatives and reached a consensus on collaboration. They agreed to jointly offer a 3+2 international undergraduate program in tourism management while also advancing credit transfer agreements for engineering programs to expand overseas study opportunities for students. Additionally, they explored short-term faculty and student exchange programs and further education opportunities for teachers, aiming to enhance collaboration and broaden global engagement.

The delegation then visited APU Malaysia, where they were warmly welcomed by President Ho Chin Kwong and other representatives. Both sides discussed the feasibility of jointly establishing training bases for new energy vehicle maintenance and data center management. A plaque unveiling ceremony was also held to mark the official launch of the establishment of the “Kuala Lumpur Overseas College,” a collaborative initiative between Shanghai College of Science and Technology and APU.

Upon arriving in Singapore, the delegation first visited ITE, where they toured various laboratories and training facilities, gaining insights into ITE’s practical and theoretical teaching model. They then proceeded to Nanyang Polytechnic to exchange ideas on teaching experiences and research achievements in fields such as biomedical science and artificial intelligence. During discussions with both institutions, key topics included student exchange programs, faculty training, and joint research projects, leading to multiple cooperation agreements, culminating in the signing of multiple cooperation agreements to strengthen future collaboration.

The delegation also visited Schneider Electric (Singapore), where they were warmly received by Ravi, Global President for Sustainability at Schneider Electric, and Ge Wen from the Energy Management Division. The discussions focused on three initiatives: establishing a Schneider Global Apprentice Training Base, launching the second phase of the Schneider Green and Low-Carbon Technology Application Center, and developing a Schneider Course Research and Development Center. Schneider Electric has been collaborating with our school since 2021, supporting the establishment of our Green and Low-Carbon Technology Application Center. Both parties expressed their commitment to deepening collaboration through a systematic and comprehensive approach, expanding cooperation opportunities, and enhancing mutual benefits to achieve shared growth and success.

This visit has not only strengthened mutual understanding and trust between our school and key educational and corporate partners in Malaysia and Singapore but has also laid a solid foundation for future cooperation. Moving forward, our school will continue to uphold its commitment to internationalization, further expanding global partnerships, and enhancing educational excellence to cultivate innovative talents with a global mindset. Additionally, we will actively explore new pathways for international vocational education, contributing to global educational development while supporting China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

In September 2023, Chen Pai enrolled in the Applied English program at Shanghai College of Science and Technology. However, he always harbored a “theater dream” in his heart. “Chen Pai, the ‘December 9th’ activity is starting,” his friends would remind him, knowing he had always longed for a stage to showcase his talents.
For this performance, playwright Chen Pai put in tremendous effort. He spent half a year deeply researching the life of Gu Weijun, an outstanding figure who grew up in Jiading. Gu Weijun’s life story not only inspired him but also helped him profoundly understand the historical and cultural significance carried by theater.
On December 9th, the “December 9th” Science, Technology, Culture, and Art Achievement Showcase was held at Shanghai Institute of Technology. That evening, the student-written, directed, and performed play “Winter of 1919” recreated the momentous historical events of the Paris Peace Conference and the May Fourth Movement. It also incorporated Chen’s own understanding of youth and passion, highlighting the students’ deep concern for the nation’s fate.
After the performance, the audience applauded enthusiastically, cheering for the brilliant interpretation of the program. What moved Chen Pai even more was that the school had specially invited his mother to come from Changzhou to watch the performance. “Watching my child’s play ‘Winter of 1919’ live, I’m very proud. I can see he put in a lot of effort, and I’m particularly grateful to the school leaders and teachers for their careful guidance,” his mother said, tightly embracing her son, filled with excitement and pride. Seeing his long-absent mother walk onto the stage, Chen Pai was moved to tears and too emotional to speak.
Chen Pai said, “I’m grateful for the school’s thoughtful arrangements. I’m very happy studying and living at the Institute.”
Moreover, to encourage more disabled students like Chen Pai who have dreams and aspirations, the Jiading District Mobile Company donated an iPad to support his theater dream.
The successful performance of “Winter of 1919” reflects the school’s care and support for disabled students, highlighting the school’s humanistic depth and inclusive educational philosophy.

To better serve society and meet diverse learner needs, Shanghai College of Science and Technology (SCST) and Shanghai Open University Affiliated High School (SOUAHS) have officially partnered to establish an adult high school education teaching site (with language specialization) at SCST’s Minhang campus. This collaboration leverages the college’s facilities and industry-academia-research bases, aligning with regional educational strategies to explore new pathways for educating children of migrant workers from other provinces who are contributing to Shanghai’s new era of development.
On January 3, 2025, SCST and SOUAHS held in-depth discussions at SCST’s Minhang campus, followed by an unveiling ceremony for the SOUAHS teaching site at SCST. Attendees included Hu Xiaohui (CPC Committee Member, Discipline Inspection Secretary, and Vice President of SCST), Guo Wei (Director of Minhang Campus Management Office and Dean of International Education College), Hou Yameng (Deputy Director of Minhang Campus Management Office and Vice Dean of International Education College), Hong Jianfeng (Party Branch Secretary of SOUAHS), Zhu Hongying (Director of Teaching Department at SOUAHS), Xi Xiaojing (Deputy Director of Comprehensive Department at SOUAHS), Hu Xiang (Project Manager of SOUAHS SCST Teaching Site and Principal of Shangning Continuing Education College), and Zhou Lin (Board Chairman of Shangning Continuing Education College).
During the meeting, Hu Xiaohui warmly welcomed the SOUAHS leaders and experts, briefly introducing SCST’s development history, educational characteristics, and recent achievements in international cooperation and exchange. Guo Wei detailed the International Education College and Minhang campus, emphasizing the college’s unique advantages in vocational education and international schooling. Hu Xiang reported on the teaching site’s enrollment and teaching preparations, showcasing its readiness in curriculum, faculty, and facilities. Hong Jianfeng outlined the teaching site’s work plan, stressing the importance of teaching quality and management, and pledged full support for its construction and development. The representatives then engaged in in-depth discussions, reaching a consensus on better serving students and improving teaching quality.
Amidst applause, the unveiling ceremony for the SOUAHS SCST teaching site took place, marking the official launch of this project.
The establishment of the SOUAHS teaching site at SCST will provide more diverse educational options for high school students, fostering excellent talents that meet societal needs and industry development requirements.

Our College’s Students Achieve Great Success Again in the 2024 Shanghai Female College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition!

Recently, the awards ceremony of the 2024 Shanghai Female College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was successfully held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Our university achieved remarkable results, securing 1 Second Prize and 1 Third Prize, while the institution itself was honored with the “Outstanding Organization Award”.
Notably, our university stood out as the only higher vocational college to win in the entrepreneurship category. These accomplishments mark a historic milestone for our institution, representing both record-breaking achievements and the highest number of awards ever received in the history of this competition.

After the competition’s launch in June, our university’s leadership placed great emphasis on participation. Through active mobilization by the Innovation and Entrepreneurship College and various secondary colleges, our institution selected 247 projects to compete in the municipal semi-finals. Ultimately, 2 projects stood out and advanced to the municipal finals, competing alongside 15 undergraduate institutions including Donghua University and Fudan University.
Following intense competition, our university’s projects achieved remarkable success:
1. Second Prize in the Entrepreneurship Category: “Guangjie Zhihang – Offshore Unmanned Cleaning Photovoltaic Industry Practitioner”
2. Third Prize in the Creative Category: “Bing Xiao Xue Shi – China’s First Three-in-One Snow Removal and Ice Breaking Machine”

The 2024 Shanghai Female College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition is a big event in Shanghai. It’s organized by several important city departments and supported by universities and women’s groups.
This year’s competition was quite popular:
• Over 1,400 students signed up
• They came from 55 different colleges
• 11 local women’s groups were involved
• 1,094 different projects were entered
The competition aims to encourage young women in college to come up with new ideas and start businesses. It’s a great chance for female students to show their creativity and entrepreneurial skills.

The school plans to continue using this competition as a platform to support female students’ success. They aim to improve resource use, enhance innovation support, and boost women’s employment and entrepreneurship. By discovering great projects, encouraging participation in innovation contests, and inspiring students to explore new ideas, the school hopes to help female students thrive in their careers. This effort showcases that women today can innovate, pursue their dreams, and achieve just as much as men. Ultimately, the goal is to empower female students to make significant contributions to society and demonstrate their capabilities in the modern world.
