Department of Physical Education Holds Planning Meeting for 2024 Autumn Sports Day

In response to the national fitness initiative and in line with President Xi Jinping’s important message—”enjoy sports, enhance physical fitness, foster healthy character, strengthen willpower, and cultivate well-rounded socialist builders and successors”—our school is committed to the educational principle of “health first.” To enhance unity among faculty and students, promote lifelong habits of physical activity and healthy living, improve student fitness, and enrich campus life, Shanghai College of Science and Technology plans to host its Autumn Sports Day in late October 2024.

To ensure smooth preparation and execution, the Department of General Education held a planning meeting on April 24 at 4:20 p.m. in Room 106, Building 2. The meeting was chaired by Mr. He Yunjian, Head of the Department, and attended by all PE faculty members.

Meeting Highlights

Mr. He Yunjian conveyed the school’s preparation plan for the inaugural Autumn Sports Day, detailing the event schedule and division of tasks. Each PE teacher’s role and responsibilities were clearly outlined to ensure a coordinated effort.

Suggestions and Contributions

Based on past experience, Mr. Zhang Jin and Ms. Jiang Suya proposed preliminary plans for event categories, competition rules, participants, medical support, and budgeting. Younger faculty members Yang Qingkun, Wang Qingkang, Chen Sicheng, and Kong Deyang contributed innovative ideas and added modern, youth-oriented elements to the event lineup.

Toward a Celebratory Sports Gathering

The meeting emphasized that each faculty member in charge of an event must fulfill their duties in accordance with the plan, prioritize safety to prevent student injuries, and actively encourage staff participation to foster enthusiasm for physical activity. The goal is to host an inspiring and unifying sports event that showcases the energy and spirit of our school community.

On April 26, 2024, the men’s basketball league organized by the “Jiakuntai” Vocational Education Alliance concluded successfully at Shanghai Arts and Crafts Vocational College. The tournament featured four teams from the Jiading-Kunshan-Taicang region: Shanghai Polytechnic Institute, Shanghai Arts and Crafts Vocational College, Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Vocational Technical College, and Suzhou Silicon Lake Vocational and Technical College.

After internal selection, our school’s 15-member basketball team represented the college in this competitive event. Throughout the tournament, the players demonstrated outstanding skills and an unyielding spirit. Their close teamwork and precise tactical execution led them into the finals, where they faced fierce competition in a nail-biting match. Both teams played intensely, trading points with little separating them. Despite their valiant efforts and several highlight-worthy plays, our team narrowly missed the championship by just one point, finishing as the tournament’s runner-up.

School leadership praised the team’s excellent performance and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence in future competitions. The school remains committed to investing in sports programs and providing students with more opportunities to train and showcase their talents.

This tournament not only promoted sports exchange among vocational colleges but also enhanced our school’s visibility and influence in sports education. We are confident that our students will continue to embody the spirit of sportsmanship and contribute to society with well-rounded talents.

At noon on June 19, to further promote mass sports activities on campus, advocate a healthy and civilized lifestyle, and encourage faculty and students to actively organize and participate in various physical activities to improve their fitness, the School of General Education at Shanghai Polytechnic Institute held an Outstanding Student Sports Leaders Award Ceremony in the gymnasium. Based on the department leadership’s decision, student sports leaders who performed exceptionally well this semester were recognized.

Mr. Wu Donghua, Director of the School of General Education, and Mr. He Yunjian, Director of the Physical Education Section, attended the event and presented certificates to 18 outstanding student sports leaders, including Chen Xi.

By recognizing outstanding individuals, sharing experiences, and setting examples, this event inspired students to actively participate in school sports activities, shoulder responsibilities, and forge ahead—contributing strong spiritual momentum to the development of the school’s sports culture.

On October 20, the finals of the Fitness Yoga Competition of the 4th Shanghai Citizens Games and the “Changshou Cup” Shanghai Fitness Yoga Championship successfully concluded at Putuo Sports Center. The event attracted over 200 yoga enthusiasts from 23 teams, including participants from 13 districts, 6 universities, and 2 enterprises and institutions. It was a stunning showcase of strength and grace, softness and power, form and posture, movement and stillness.

For the first time, a university division was introduced in the finals, providing a stage for college students to demonstrate their talent. Competition among universities was especially fierce, with more than 30 participants competing on the same stage. Guided by Ms. Chen Yanke from the Department of Physical Education, our six-member team achieved outstanding results in their debut performance. Student Hu Shuqian placed 6th, breaking into the top eight, while the other five team members placed 9th, 11th, 12th, 15th, and 17th respectively. Their excellent performance received unanimous praise from the judges. Our school was also recognized as an Outstanding Organization, and Ms. Chen Yanke was awarded the title of Outstanding Judge.

The yoga team was officially established on September 12, 2024, under the guidance of Ms. Chen Yanke. The six selected members trained intensively for one month, and their hard work paid off with these impressive results. After the competition, He Yunjian, Head of the Department of Physical Education, congratulated the team for their achievements and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence and bring further honors to the school.

This remarkable performance by our yoga team was made possible thanks to the support of the Foundation Department and school leadership, as well as the dedicated coaching by Ms. Chen Yanke. We are confident that, with continued efforts from all faculty and students, our campus sports culture will flourish and achieve even greater success in the future.
